Self Worth vs. Self Esteem
For a little over a week, I have been asking women of all ages how they define self-worth. There were many that did not know and there were some that had an interesting answer. I have spent the same amount of time pondering and researching the definition of self-worth. Let's be real for a moment....we all present ourselves with high self-esteem/self-worth and confidence. How can it be that this thing that we present is difficult to define? Does it really indicate that many of us are just the opposite of what is presented?
It was interesting that self-esteem and self-worth are usually defined as one and the same. There are some theorist that believe that they are not the same. I have concluded, after researching and meditating, that they are in fact different.
SELF-ESTEEM (External Factor)
Esteem deals with your respect or high regard for a person. When the two words are put together it says your personal feelings of how much respect or regard you have for yourself. The respect and regard are directly related to the external factors of how well you perform or achieve in life.
SELF-WORTH (Internal Factor)
Worth deals with the level at which someone deserves to be valued. Self-worth is the level of worth that we internally perceive that we have. Basically you must have a level of love and respect for yourself. This can not be found outside(externally), because things and people change (ask Lebron James).
My eyes have been opened to a whole new way to view things! I often wondered if self-esteem is a learned behavior or if it is taught as a young child. I now realize that it can not be taught or learned until that person has a certain level of self-worth. How do you get self-worth?
I was watching Oprah last week, and Fergie (the Duchess of York) was her guest. Fergie had it all in life and more than we could ever imagine. She mentioned that she had at least 4 women in waiting at all times. These are women who are waiting to pick up her handkerchief if she dropped it! WOW! Imagine 4 women just standing and waiting on you to need them for ANYTHING! Even with all of that, she told Oprah that she had no self-worth. She continued to explain how empty and lost she has been for as long as she could remember. This is proof that self-worth can not be found in external factors. It appeared that she had the perfect life of riches and royalty, but on the inside she was empty.
HOW DO YOU DEVELOP SELF-WORTH?
Start by:
Loving yourself unconditionally. Don't let your size, husband, children, job, income, boyfriend, friends, family, or level of education define who you are. They are not promised and if you put all of your self-worth into them, when they change so will your level of self-worth.
Remember: Outside external factors do not define who you are!!!!
